This fall we are going to have two chess clubs: one for beginners (first grade through fifth grade), and a second one for students who already know how to play.  The only prerequisite for the beginner club is that students must be able to sit still and take in instruction.

Our goals in teaching chess are: (1) to develop thinking skills, (2) to promote sustained concentration, and (3) to promote cultural literacy regarding the royal game.  We will be using the wonderful "Think-Like-a-King" educational software and club management system—the official scholastic program of the U.S. Chess Federation.  Additional assistance will be provided from the Russian Convekta chess programs.  I will make use of presentation software, chess videos, class puzzles, worksheets, and a demonstration board.  We will offer students a year-long program of chess instruction. 

Throughout the year there will be opportunities for chess club members to participate in a variety of chess tournaments in Colorado Springs, where students can compete for individual and team prizes.  I will coach the team and meet them at these tournaments.  The 2009-2010 year at PWES promises to be the best year ever for chess!
